Start Up One Stop

For Startups, By Startups

8/31/10

Good morning, All, and we know some of you have startups in the education space, sooo – your bonus today is Kaufman Labs Education Ventures bootcamp for – of course, education startups. Deadline for consideration is September 20. An SOS member brought it to our attention, and we believe in sharing. When appropriate. Don’t touch my coffee in the morning. Don’t even think about it.

Seriously.

Details and application forms for KLE is here: http://www.kauffmanlabs.org/?gclid=CKWCpYHIiaMCFRNO5QodajRWew

Next, Amazon Web Services (AWS) Startup Challenge: an annual competition designed for young, promising start-ups to get noticed and compete for a chance to win $100,000 in cash and credits. Start-ups that are using the AWS cloud computing platform – and we know you’re out there – can submit an application which describes their business plan and their use of AWS. This year, they’ve expanded their world footprint, so it’s not just open to US-based companies. And all eligible participants receive $25 AWS credits!Details are here: aws.amazon.com/startupchallenge/

Congratulations to Charles Torres of Reitler Kailas & Rosenblatt. Charles, an early SOS member, was just named Attorney of the Year by the New York Enterprise Report, a publication aimed at helping New York entrepreneurs grow their businesses. I know some of you know him, since Charles is one of the attorneys who responds to legal questions that are posted here and the firm is very startup-friendly. Other attorneys do as well, and our thanks to all of them!

Finally, we want to wish you all a happy and safe Labor Day Weekend, and because it’s a short week, we’re keeping it short(er) today. We might do a bbq Sunday, so ping me if you’re in town. See you in September and until then, help is on the way…

Good morning, All, and an SOS member brought these guys to our attention – and they’re on David Lerner’s early stage investor map – yet. Good news: their focus is primarily on NYC and the surrounding NE and Mid-Atlantic area companies, in software, IT, Internet, tech-enabled services, business services, digital media, mobile and health care IT. Average investments are $100k-$500k. More info on their website: arcangelfund.com.

Read on: there’s an investor on the list who’s looking for startups to fund.

Next, Bootstrapper Summit is October 5, and they’re looking for startups who want to present to the angel and investors who will be there in the room. Here’s the link to apply: http://bit.ly/bRmhth. Yes, there are associated fees. Exact size of these fees depends on the stage of the company and the size of the proposed raise. BUT, do make sure to mention that you’re a StartupOneStop member for an additional 20% discount.

For investors and/or the rest of us who would like to attend, they’re giving us a 20% discount. The code is SOS when you register at http://bssv.eventbrite.com.

Startups ranging from Seed to Series B to private equity will be featured on BSS V. Tracks will include Digital Media, Learning Platforms, Digital Content and many others. Startups that don’t fit into one of these tracks will present on the Cool Startup & Special Situations Track. If your startup has a completed product or/and a management team with a serious track record, investors representing over $5B in capital are expected to attend BSS V. Alliance Bernstein, DFJ Gotham, First Mark Capital, Golden Seeds, Grand Banks Capital, Greenhill SAVP, Intel Capital, Metamorphic Ventures, New York Angels, RRE Ventures and Tri State Ventures are among investors who attended past Bootstrapper Summits.

My work here is done.

Almost.

We hope you all enjoy your last full week of pre-Labor Day summer (we did say FULL week) and now, as always, help is on the way…

Good morning, All, and yes, David Lerner has mapped the whole venture
ecosystem for us – and others – in New York, Silicon Valley and Boston.
You’ll find it here and he even includes twitter handles, when possible.
http://bit.ly/9wTCJL. So, anyone out there wants to do a Saul
Steinberg-style Entrepreneur’s View of the US Venture Community? If you need
a reference point: http://bigthink.com/ideas/21121- and if only moi could
draw. Hint: The Flatiron District, Sand Hill Road and Route 128 should all
be prominently featured, for the artists on the list who don’t get around
much.

That was fun, now on with the show. Congratulations to list members Pixable
on their write-up in Time Out New York last week. The piece is here:

http://pixb.ly/timeout.

Update: our next ‘Find-A-Cofounder’ III event will not be until early
October. Still, if you need one in the meantime, you’re always welcome to
post to the list, because we’re always here to help.

Speaking of which – help is on the way…

Bet that got your attention and the best part is – it’s true!

Good morning, All, and FYI: many of them are computer science and business majors. Here’s the deal:

Who are they? 30 Int’l college students selected for Intra-Governmental program to study at Queens College and do internship in your business.
What do that expect from the internship? Learning US business practice in an English speaking work environment (preferably) related to their area of study.
When they can start an internship? From 26th August 2010 for one year.
Can my company interview them? Yes, they are available for in-person interviews. Send Molly Moon ceo@title8advisory.com your intern’s job description after selecting your finalist (up to 4) from the attached list. We set up your interview in 3 business days.
Can any company host the intern? Any lawfully filed US company that has an office (no home office) allows intern a space and equipment (if needed).
What happen after the interview? When the student accepts an offer you release, s/he will start from the date you suggest.
The unpaid is truly okay for them? In support of taking unpaid internship, this program funds $750 per month up to 6 months. Matching funds/Meal allowance/transportation stipend are all welcomed.
Can we pay? Sure! The students have intern (J) visa, which can legally work, be paid and pay taxes.
Further conversation? Feel free to contact:

It’s Christmas in August, eh, and aren’t you glad you’re here reading this and not off on some beach in the Hamptons? Ok, that wouldn’t be too shabby, either, but wait! There’s more! Yes, an investor posted today, so keep reading, because (even more) help is on the way…

Good morning, All, and before it’s over – the summer, that is – some summer reading for startups:

This past Friday, Dave McClure outlined his investment thesis on his blog, Master of 500 Hats. Worth the read: http://bit.ly/cQLeLF

FYI, McClure just filed with the SEC for his own venture fund, 500 Startups, (http://tcrn.ch/aDa0CK)- and, among other things, also leads a travel group called GeeksOnaPlane to promote cultural exchange & education for tech entrepreneurs around the world.

Tech trivia: Don’t know if they still do, but in the days of web 1.0, the flight between San Jose and Seattle was called the Nerd Bird. Now it seems to be the flight between San Jose and Austin. Times change. And we supposed the NYC equivalent would be the N (or R), appropriately enough.

Next: We’re gearing up for ‘Find-A-Cofounder III’ and changing it up a bit. This time, we’re going to have speed dating to meet technologists, and techs will get in free. Stay tuned for more info on that. You’ll also hear from previous attendees who did manage to find their cofounders at the event – and they’ll tell you how they did it – and how it’s going. We’ll still have the panel and the networking, not to worry. The event will take place Wednesday, September 1. Just giving you advance notice.

While some thing change, some things don’t, which means, of course, that help is on the way…
