1/7/14

Good morning, All,

It’s been an interesting millennium so far. A bit dark and seemingly getting darker. Then we came across this piece (What If the 21st Century Begins in 2014? ) and while we don’t agree with all of the points the author makes, it is true that no real millennial shift begins at the zero hour. Literally.

Not to start off the year as the voice of doom and gloom, but let’s take stock of the 21st Century, to date: our privacy is gone. There isn’t a way that we can’t be tracked – by our own government, no less, the very people whose salaries we pay, lest we forget.

So far this year, a secret court has approved three more months of NSA phone snooping. What kind of government needs a secret court – to spy on its own citizens? Not to mention its own elected officials. Although Rand Paul just announced that he is leading a class-action lawsuit against Obama over NSA spying.

Google’s drive into robotics should concern us all “The company’s expansion into robotics was developed in tandem with the US military. Where will its power play stop?”

Good question.

We know that our focus here should be on what’s next on the horizon in terms of tech for 2014. What are the hot sectors? Will YouTube be disrupted? We hope so – and we believe so. Sorry, GOOG, but all our bases are not belong to you.

But we are ever optimistic. People will put up with just so much for just so long. And we suspect that a more important reason why GOOG employees don’t wear their GOOG glass so much any more isn’t merely because they don’t want to advertise that they work for Google and if that is the case, why not?

New Year’s rant over. Next week, we’ll return to our regularly scheduled newsletter. For now, happy new year and welcome to the millennium. Now go out there and do what you do best: disrupt, and do be sure to use your powers for good. Onward and forward.
