A Flea and a Fly and a Seasonal Flu

The headline is courtesy of a little poem by Ogden Nash
“A flea and a fly in a flu
Were imprisoned, so what could they do?
Said the fly, “let us flee!”
“Let us fly!” said the flea.
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.”

Not the usual tech-focused editorial this week, as we’ve been under the weather with a very debilitating bug that’s going around, and a particularly virulent one, according to one of the medical practitioners in my family. Two, actually.

Then again, it’s flu season, and symptoms at the onset may vary: headache, sneezing, congestion, coughing, fever, sore throat, stomach/intestinal pain, loss of appetite and then the general aches and pains that come with the malady.

And we know the cure: bedrest and lots of it, although sleep isn’t usually a problem. Staying awake for any amount of time, however, may be. Some take aspirin. Some take an over-the-counter cold formula. Drinking lots of fluids is critical, as is taking electrolytes as the fever will deplete your system. Neglecting to take electrolytes – and vitamins, of course – is what has been leading to hospitalization, due to dehydration, no matter that you’re imbibing water and tea.

Statistics on this year’s flu are not in yet, but interesting to take a look at the number of cases in the last few years and the number of deaths from seasonal flu as well, according to the CDC. Odd that both numbers were down at the height of Covid, and draw what conclusions you may. Ours is simply to report.

And to remind you that, while the holiday party season is in full swing and you do want to get out there again and meet people/network, if you’re not feeling well, do everyone, yourself included, a favor and stay home. The only thing one should be spreading this time of year is good cheer and, pun intended, the seasonal flu is nothing to sneeze at. Onward and forward.
