Good morning, All, and seriously. We heard a story last week – and no, it’s
not one of those Tall Tales from the Alley. It came from a trusted source.
So, when Boxee was first pitching Fred Wilson, Fred said no. Undeterred,
what Boxee did was to update Fred monthly of their progress. Of course, the
return email was always ‘N-O.’ This went on for 18 months, until there came
that one update from Boxee, and Fred said ‘Yes!’

Which confirms what we’ve always believed since earliest childhood: that
‘No’ is an acronym and think about it. When you were a kid and your parents
said No, it was always ‘N-O, no!’ Not once did they say, ‘well, dear, of
course that’s a Yes, Y-E-S, Yes!’

Never happened. Read More...

Good morning, All, and we’ve listed some blogs that we felt you might find helpful.

Good morning, All, and our thanks to everyone who attended the event on Monday evening and an observation: the event was held at Drom, which is a club/bar in the east village and we had a great turnout. However (and not surprisingly) – a number of those present were looking for technical cofounders. And we know that techies, on balance, often need some enticement in order to step away from their screens. Suggestion: just as most bars offer specials to entice women to show up, well, you see where we’re going with this. Working on it.

Speaking of which, and we hope investors on the list are listening: we’ve been to a number of pitch events, investors’ open hours, etc. Seems to us a much better plan than the usual VC conferences where they primarily seem to talk to each other – and listen to the few finalist startups who are presenting – would be to host more informal VC pitch events. Why don’t VCs host happy hours, where people are more relaxed, and it’s much easier to talk to a potential investor – or investee – in a more casual setting. Might be a good formula: put VCs and entrepreneurs in a bar and just add water. Or some such beverage. Just a thought . We’ll work on it and if any of you have any thoughts on it – email us at hello@startuponestop.com.

Mark your calendars and we’re giving you a lot of lead time this time: next barbeque is scheduled for Bastille Day – July 14, once again sponsored by 1099partners.com and we hope to see you there. Anyway, just a head’s up and that’s then and this is now, which means, of course, that help is on the way… Read More...

Good morning, All, and again our thanks to Gautam Gupta of General Catalyst for taking the time to meet with some of our startups on Friday and we do hope it was worthwhile for all.

Yes, TechCrunch Disrupt is in town until tomorrow and for $2995, you too could be there, too. And maybe you are. We are not, although we were there for SAI Startup2010 last Thursday – as were a number of you on the list – and it was a stellar. Dennis Crowley (the most wanted man in SV) was as funny and spot-on as ever and yes, foursquare, who are adding 15,000 new users daily, does have a business model. Starting with the $1.00 off Frappuccinos for mayors of Starbucks. Just – literally – a taste of things to come. Best line (wait for it): in response to privacy issues related to location-based application. “As long as it’s opt-in I don’t see the problem,” he said, pointing out that he finds passive location applications like Google Latitude more of a concern. “It haunts me more than it helps me.” Amen! The winner of $100,000 in cash and services was RedBeacon.com, a Silicon-Valley based startup conceived by three former GOOGs. Coming to NY and a city near you, well, maybe sooner now that they’ve won. Finally, our thanks once again to SAI for the discount.

Onward and forward to the week ahead and somewhere in the none-too-distant future: Read More...

Good morning, All, and yes, we know we’ve been threatening it for a while, but we’re finally having another gathering! You can thank 1099 Partners (1099partners.com), who are sponsoring and more information to come (next week) about our sponsors and the event, but we wanted to get on your radar. And it literally will be in a garden, so wear comfortable shoes and yes, there will be a barbeque – burgers and beer. And speaking of beer and entrepreneurs – the House just passed American Craft Beer Week, in case you were distracted by the primaries and missed it, celebrating, yes, entrepreneurship – and a good brewski, we suppose. So we will try to stock a few microbrews.

Ooo, could an SOS softball league be far behind? Calm down, we’re not that organized.

And speaking of getting on the radar, General Catalyst is in from Boston and they’re holding office hours, yes, tomorrow. Time does fly, eh? Meetings will be held at the Silicon Alley Insider Offices (119 5th Ave, 7th floor) and here’s the link to get on the calendar: http://doodle.com/r26m8y4dqhzcpcgc. Do us proud, SOSers and maybe GC will be moved to sponsor an event for us soon as well. Yes, we know: subtly went out the window a long time ago. Read More...
